EMI Puts Abbey Road Studios up for Sale

Terra Firma will attempt to alleviate some of its £3.3bn debt from its leveraged buy-out of EMI by putting Abbey Road studios on the block. Best known as the Beatles recording studio of choice, and the title of their last album, EMI’s Abbey Road is among the few studios left large enough to accommodate a symphony orchestra. more

James Gaffigan to Lucerne Symphony

American conductor James Gaffigan, 30, only recently announced as principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic as of 2011, has another new job in the pipeline: chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, effective with the 2011-12 season.

Gaffigan is a former associate conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. He won first prize in the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition 2004 in Frankfurt. more

Quartet San Francisco: Brubeck On Strings [with Oberlin grad Keith Lawrence!]

As today's 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony begins, members of the Quartet San Francisco [note that Keith Lawrence, violist, is an Oberlin grad] will be crossing their fingers. Returning Scores Reminder!

The largest collection of material in the Conservatory Library are musical scores. As expected, keeping track of them is also a big part of this collection!

With the end of semester due date approaching, remember:

1. Check the back inside cover for all parts/leaves that should be included before returning them.

2. The Conservatory Library policy states that any scores returned with missing parts will be kept on your student/patron record, and a replacement fee and costs will be incurred.

This can also affect and delay registration for the next semester, obtaining transcripts, etc. By making sure this procedure is followed allows us to make our scores readily available for other patrons, as well as yourself!

Conservatory Library accessions its 40,000th CD!!

Liz Bennett, student assistant in the Conservatory Library, accessioned the library's 40,000th CD. This milestone number has been assigned to the 6-CD set titled Woodstock, 40 years on: back to Yasgur's Farm, issued by Rhino.

Title change in Periodicals

Newsletter--Institute for Studies in American Music has been renamed~the new title is American Music Review and the first issue is available in Periodicals.
